Why did Jesus die on the cross?

It was God’s will to have Jesus die on the cross. Through Christ, God made the way for the world to be reconciled to Himself. For all those who would believe the truth.

“Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5:18&19 NAS)

The world is adrift in a sea of sin.

“in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.” (Ephesians 2:2 NIV)

Jesus came to save us from this condition.

Jesus says to His disciples,

“Follow me and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19 NIV)

With the idea that His disciples would pull people up out of this sea of sin and show God’s followers a place where they can live, not being flooded with the destruction that comes from sin. Therefore, disciples of Christ should be showing the world how to live without sin. This can only be done with God’s power. So Christians need to be taught how to find this relationship with God. whereby He gives us power to overcome sin.

Because sin is what destroys us.

“For the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23 KJV)

Christ died on the cross to save us from sin.

“Behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”(John 1:29 KJV)

Jesus’s death was an atonement for sin but it was also a means to remove sin from the world. Jesus Himself witnessed to this truth.

“Jesus says you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”(John 8:32 KJV)

Free from comitting sin!

Jesus died on the cross to do away with sin in the world.

“And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21 NLT)

“As Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.”(Eph. 5: 25,26&27 KJV)

The Good News, The Gospel of Jesus Christ is that God has brought forth His power to overcome sin in this world. Through Jesus Christ.

Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God to salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”

This power begins with the cross of Christ and is also found in the word of God.

James 1:21 “Wherefore putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”

And God’s power is given to us by His Spirit. To those who obey God.

Acts 5:32 “We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

To each one according to gift of Christ and of God our Father.

Ephesians 4:7&8 “But to every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Why he said, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.”
